Background
Beijing is engaging in its first ever Olympic
Games to be held in 2008, and the preparations for construction of
sports venues ---the most important part of the preparatory work---is
in full swing. State General Administration of Sports of P.R. China
is responsible for the construction and management of Beijing Shooting
Range and Laoshan Cycling Velodrome, the main venues for the 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games. The Sports Administration then organized the International
Competition of the Architectural Design for Beijing Shooting Range
and Laoshan Cycling Velodrome, and received 11 design works from world
top design companies from China, Australia, Germany, Japan and Spain.
Introduction
After the competition, State General Administration
of Sports of P.R. China compiled The Architectural Design for Beijing
Shooting Range and Laoshan Cycling Velodrome for the 2008 Olympic Games
to keep records of the valuable work and effort put into this significant
event. The book is a gallery of the 11 design concepts with multi-dimensional
pictures and detailed explanations both in Chinese and English. It
introduces world leading design works and the most recent techniques
for sports construction from professional and artistic perspectives,
and offers top level scope for professional designers and people interested
in sports building design and construction. These design works are
original and exquisitely worked out, reflecting the latest sports construction
concepts in the world while not omitting the major elements of Chinese
culture. The new technologies and materials applied to these design
works fully interpret the major ideas of the 2008 Beijing Olympiad---science& technology,
nature, and human culture. The designers were fully aware of the functional
utility of the sports venues for and after the Olympic Games, and gave
thorough consideration to the environmental implications and energy
efficiency, representing the highest level of sports architectural
design in the world.
